Funchal and its unique story!

Portuguese navigators Tristão Vaz Teixeira, Bartolomeu Perestrelo and João Gonçalves Zarco  discovered the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo in 1419.
The first island that was discovered was Porto Santo in 1418.
One year after discovering the island Porto Santo, they arrived at Madeira.
Due to the  islands locations  the colonization started around 1425.
The first settlers were the 3 captains and their families and also a small group of people.
To develope agriculture on the island, they had to build water channels “levadas” in order to have water from the north coast in the southern coast of the island.
Fish and horticultural products were the main subsistence.
